Standards & Protocols

The internet only works because devices agree to follow the rules. This module will test your ability to memorise definitions, categorise protocols, and apply them to real-world exam scenarios.

1. The Rules of the Game

Standards

An agreed way of doing things.

A standard provides universal rules so that hardware and software from different manufacturers can interact (e.g., USB port shapes, Ethernet cables).

Protocols

A specific set of rules for transferring data.

These govern exactly how messages are formatted, sent, and received across a network so devices can understand one another.

Activity 1: The "Standard vs Protocol" Sorter

Categorise the following statements quickly. Remember the core definitions!

Remaining: 4

"An agreed way of doing things."

2. Web & File Protocols

Different protocols have highly specific jobs. You must memorise these four foundational rules.

TCP/IP
The foundational suite. It dictates how data is broken into packets, routed, and reassembled accurately.
HTTP
Used by web browsers to request and receive web pages. Data is sent in plain text.
HTTPS
The secure version of HTTP. It encrypts the data. Vital for online banking and shopping.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol. Used specifically to send or retrieve files directly to/from a server.

Activity 2: The "Secure Connection" Inspector

Data packets are rolling in! Read the scenario and decide if it's safe to use HTTP (Plain text) or if it requires HTTPS (Encrypted).

3. The Email Trio

Exam Trap: Never mix up sending and receiving protocols.

SMTP

SENDING ONLY

Used to send emails from your device to a mail server.

POP

RECEIVING (Download)

Retrieves emails. It usually downloads the email and deletes it from the server.

IMAP

RECEIVING (Sync)

Retrieves emails but leaves a copy on the server. Keeps your inbox synchronised across devices.

Activity 3: The Protocol Postroom

Read the envelope scenario. Click the correct server postbox to process the request.

Current Scenario

"I want to send an email with an attachment to my colleague."

Activity 4: Exam Scenario Match-Up

Click a scenario on the left, then click the matching protocol on the right. This simulates a classic 4-mark OCR question.

Excellent work, Student.
