J277/01: Unit 1.2 Primary Storage
Question Answer Marks Guidance
1
  1. primary
  2. ROM
  3. start-up
  4. non-volatile
  5. RAM
  6. currently being used (or similar e.g., 'currently running')
  7. volatile
7
1 mark for each correct term in the correct place.
2
  • Row 1: ROM
  • Row 2: RAM
  • Row 3: RAM
  • Row 4: RAM
4
1 mark per correct tick.
If multiple ticks in one row, award 0 for that row.
3
  • To store data / instructions / applications / OS [1]
  • ... that are currently in use / currently running [1]
2
AO1 (Knowledge)
Do not award "stores data" without the qualification "currently in use".
Reject: "stores files" (implies secondary storage).
4
  • It needs to store the start-up instructions / bootstrap / firmware [1]
  • So that the instructions are not lost when the car engine/power is turned off [1]
2
AO2 (Application)
Must link the purpose (instructions) to the characteristic (non-volatile) or the context (turning car off).
Accept: references to the car's specific software not needing to be changed/updated frequently.
5
  • RAM is volatile whereas ROM is non-volatile [1]
  • Meaning RAM loses data when power is off, but ROM keeps data when power is off [1]
2
AO1 (Knowledge)
Award 1 mark for the definitions.
Award 2nd mark for explaining what that means (power loss).
If candidate just defines one (e.g. "RAM is volatile") without comparison, max 1 mark.
