The Rules of Addition

Add one column at a time (right to left). There are 5 rules to remember.

The 5 Rules:

  • Rule 1: 0 + 0 = 0
  • Rule 2: 0 + 1 = 1
  • Rule 3: 1 + 0 = 1
  • Rule 4: 1 + 1 = 0, Carry 1
  • Rule 5: 1 + 1 + 1 = 1, Carry 1

Worked Example (6-bit):

  C: 110000
  011010
+ 001101
  100111
