Standards are agreed sets of rules that allow hardware and software from different manufacturers to work together.
Interoperability
Standards ensure interoperability — the ability for devices and software from any manufacturer to communicate seamlessly.
IEEE 802.3

Defines wireless local area networking standards (e.g. Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6).
